What is Healthy Child Care
America (HCCA)?
Initiated in 1995, Healthy Child Care America (HCCA) is joint effort between the
American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the US Department of Health and Human
Services' Child Care Bureau (CCB) and Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB).* HCCA seeks to ensure that all children experience quality child care within a
nurturing environment and have a medical home. Its principles are based on the
fact that families, child care providers, and health professionals in
partnership can promote the healthy development of young children in child care
settings and increase access to preventive health services and safe physical
environments.
The goals of HCCA are to provide:
-
Safe, healthy child care environments for all children, including those with
special health care needs
-
Up-to-date and easily accessible immunizations for children in child care
-
Access to quality health, dental, and developmental screenings and comprehensive
follow-up for children in child care
-
Health and mental health consultation, support, and education for all families,
children, and child care providers
-
Health, nutrition, and safety education for children in child care, their
families, and child care providers

Until January, 2005, all 50 states and territories received a grant for
this program. Federal funding ended at that time; however, states are working
hard to find ways to continue this initiative. |
